Facebook Trending Articles spotted in NewsFeed

Is Facebook going the twitter way ? We all know Facebook has a very large user base and with so many social reading apps coming up in last 6 months or so, Facebook has also started getting lot of traction even for social reading. There were reports a few weeks back that Facebook has started to test a feature named as ‘Trending Articles’ on a few profiles.

Today I spotted a smaller version of the Trending Article feature in my news feed. Well it just sits in the middle of your news feed , displaying 5 articles that are trending right now. Here is a screenshot of the same.

I am still not sure how Facebook decides what articles need to be displayed as a ‘Trending Articles’ , whether it is a global trend or a trend that has been followed by your friends, or a combination. Another thing that is to be noted whether these Articles are needed by an user, or if he finds them intrusive.

I felt it to be non necessary feature, as I already felt the same about ‘Recently Read’ articles by friends displayed by most social reading app.
